VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV): The public ESO near-IR variability survey of the Milky Way

چکیده
We describe the public ESO near-IR variability survey (VVV) scanning the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the mid-plane where star formation activity is high. The survey will take 1929 hours of observations with the 4-metre VISTA telescope during five years (2010 − 2014), covering ∼ 109 point sources across an area of 520 deg2, including 33 known globular clusters and ∼350 open clusters. The final product will be a deep near-IR atlas in five passbands (0.9−2.5 μm) and a catalogue of more than 106 variable point sources. Unlike single-epoch surveys that, in most cases, only produce 2-D maps, the VVV variable star survey will enable the construction of a 3-D map of the surveyed region using well-understood distance indicators such

VVV DR1: The First Data Release of the Milky Way Bulge and Southern Plane from the Near-Infrared ESO Public Survey VISTA Variables in the Vı́a Láctea
Context. The ESO Public Survey VISTA Variables in the Vı́a Láctea (VVV) started in 2010. VVV targets 562 sq. deg in the Galactic bulge and an adjacent plane region and is expected to run for ∼ 5 years. Aims. In this paper we describe the progress of the survey observations in the first observing season, the observing strategy and quality of the data
متن کاملThe Edge of the Milky Way Stellar Disk Revealed Using Clump Giant Stars as Distance Indicators
We use the clump giants of the disk as standard candles calibrated from Hipparcos parallaxes in order to map their distribution with two new near-IR surveys of the Galactic plane: UKIDSS-GPS and VVV. We explore different selection cuts of clump giants. We conclude that there is an edge of the stellar disk of the Milky Way at R = 13.9±0.5 kpc along various lines of sight across the galaxy. The e...
متن کاملDark Matter Subhalos and the Dwarf Satellites of the Milky Way
The Via Lactea simulation of the cold dark matter halo of the Milky Way predicts the existence of many thousands of bound subhalos with masses above a few ×106 M⊙, distributed approximately with equal mass per decade of mass. Here we show that: a) a similar steeply rising subhalo mass function is also present at redshift z = 0.5 in an elliptical-sized halo simulated with comparable resolution i...
متن کاملHundreds of Milky Way satellites? Luminosity bias in the satellite luminosity function
We correct the observed Milky Way satellite luminosity function for luminosity bias using published completeness limits for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR5. Assuming that the spatial distribution of Milky Way satellites tracks the subhalos found in the Via Lactea ΛCDM N-body simulation, we show that there should be between ∼ 300 and ∼ 600 satellites within 400 kpc of the Sun that are brighter ...
متن کاملLarge-scale Structures behind the Milky Way from Near-ir Surveys
About 25% of the optical extragalactic sky is obscured by the dust and stars of our Milky Way. Dynamically important structures might still lie hidden in this zone. Various approaches are presently being employed to uncover the galaxy distribution in the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) but all suffer from (different) limitations and selection effects. We investigated the potential of using the DENIS NI...
